Chocolat by Joanne Harris? The Devil and Miss Prym by Paolo Coelho? I'm sure there are loads more! Start an ongoing list! :-)

I like 'stranger comes to town' stories too. This one sounds very good, I'd never heard of it before.

First "stranger comes to town" book that came to mind was Germinal, by Emile Zola...in which a stranger comes to town in nineteenth century France and ignites a disastrous miner's strike. A very different kind of book; a dense but wonderful read!

I've always heard it as there are only two basic plots: a stranger rides into town and a stranger rides out of town.

Sometimes you have to stretch, but almost everything can be forced into one of those two categories.
