Charlotte and Emily were at Cowan Bridge the same year but did not become ill, perhaps because their father withdrew them after Maria had died and Elizabeth became fatally ill within a few weeks. Charlotte, Emily and Anne attended Roe Head School years later. Cowan Bridge is thought to be the model for Lowood School in “Jane Eyre.”
